About The Next Generation

The Next Generation is a periodic, online publication designed to present interesting and relevant information to premedical students, medical students and general interest readers. Responding to an insufficiency in easily accessible and permanent information for premeds and general interest readers regarding the systems of discovery, policy, and care delivery, the Next Generation seeks to encourage a new generation of clinicians and health-conscious citizens to develop broader and better educated perspectives on the field of medicine.

The Next Generation is a collaborative effort between an Editorial Staff comprised of Harvard undergraduate students and advising Editors from the New England Journal of Medicine. In an effort to promote the education of the next generation of clinicians and the general public on topics in medicine, the New England Journal of Medicine provides hosting and technical resources for the publication of the Next Generation, and the advising Editors provide guidance and insight to the NextGen Student Editors.

The Next Generation publishes five issues during each academic year on the first day of each second month (September, November, January, March, and May). A special summer issue is released on the first of July.

Content of the Next Generation

Selected Papers from the NEJM

In each issue, the Next Generation highlights three recent articles from the pages of the New England Journal of Medicine that may interest premed and general interest readers.

NextGen Special Features

Each issue of the Next Generation includes a set of exclusive Special Features that include continuing series, free-standing perspectives with influential members of the field, tutorials on scientific concepts, and descriptive articles on various elements of the field of medicine. Special Features from previous issues can be found in the Past Issues section.

Undergraduate Journal Club

Each issue includes a set of questions on the Selected Papers from NEJM for our readers to discuss with fellow students and others. We invite our readers to submit individual or group responses, opinions, and perspectives to the Next Generation. We also invite the Authors of the Selected Papers from NEJM to respond to the posted writings of our readers to encourage a wider discussion (between generations of clinicians and scientists) of these issues in medicine.

From the NextGen Editors

From time to time, the NextGen Editors will write NextGen Editorials (for example, editorials explaining the practices of the Next Generation). We also encourage our readers to write to us with questions, comments, and opinions to which we may reply in this section.
